Why Buy Gold Coins & Bars?

People have used gold as money and as a store of value for thousands of years. That history is the whole case: it is not a company, not a promise, and not a currency anyone can print more of.

What gold is, as an asset

A physical thing that has held value across countries, governments and centuries. It pays no interest and no dividend. Its job is to sit there and remain gold while other things change.

Why people hold some

The reasons we hear most often, in the words people use:

  • “I want part of my savings outside the banking system.”
  • “I do not want everything I own to depend on the same currency.”
  • “I want something I can hand to my children that does not need a login.”
  • “I already have stocks and bonds. I want something that behaves differently.”

What gold is not

It is not a way to get rich quickly, and its price rises and falls. Over short periods it can disappoint. The people who are glad they own it tend to be the ones who bought a sensible portion and left it alone.

Coins or bars

Coins from sovereign mints are easy to recognise and easy to sell one at a time. Bars carry less minting cost per ounce and suit larger amounts held in storage. Many people hold some of each.
